RRBar[Gotham City – Somewhere in the rooftops of the Garment district]

Timothy Drake Wayne liked the month of September in Gotham City. The steamy humidity of the summer was completely gone, and the temperature wasn’t so high, and didn’t get much cold. It was just perfect for his nocturnal crime-fighting routine. He was fully adapted to his identity as Red Robin, and after having taken down the corrupt cops that were trying to ignite a new gang war in Chinatown, he became fairly known in the city. Of course, the Gazette’s front page of him taking down Lynx and Scarab also helped the public to recognize the city’s newest caped crusader.

At Least Dr. Mid-Nite didn’t kick my ass‘ he thought, remembering his videocall with the JSA earlier that day. He was slightly apprehensive that the superhero physician would take offense on his suit being very similar to his, but the Doc took it very well, even cracking up a joke about Red Robin’s good taste in clothes…

Overall, things were looking up to him lately… first, he had saved Bruce’s legacy from Ra’s Al Ghul, second, Dick and the rest of the League finally deducted that Bruce was still alive and lost in time. Of course, if they had listened to him in the first place, they would not need almost an year to find that out…. and third, and most important, he had Tam. Lucius’ daughter was the best thing to come out of this whole ordeal. She was the light that brought him back to Batman’s way, when he had gone against everything that Bruce had taught him in his unholy alliance with the League of Assassins.

His thoughts of his Ebony Beauty were interrupted by the distinct sound of sub-machine gun shots, captured by the experimental audio capture network that Batman had secretly built in the city during the reconstruction, one of the many projects that just a handful of people, not including the current Dark Knight, knew about it. Of course, Tim would change that, as soon as he had his fail-safe protocols built-in. The network was a huge privacy violation, and Dick might want to shut down the whole thing instead of using it. Tim however, had no problem using the tools at his disposal in order to succeed in his crusade against crime… then perhaps, he should keep this little secret from Dick and the hobbit… Checking on his gauntlet computer, he pinpointed the origin of the disruption, and turning off the link to his HUD lenses, he checked the wind on the built in sensor, the readings in his lenses. (he had the featured added after his embarrassing landing in Chinatown, which he still blames Damian for…)

  • – “Ok, Lets give this another try…” – Red Robin said to himself, as he jumped off the building.

He grabbed his cape, letting the electric charge run trough the material, making it rigid to form a glider, as he stopped descending and flew up, propelled by his momentum and the wind. Batman had been the one who talked him into using the cape as a glider, and Red Robin was glad he did it, because it was so much faster to cross the city flying. As he passed the buildings heading into the Narrows, the Crimson Knight saw flashes on a warehouse that should be dark at that time. He zoomed in with his lenses and changed to thermal vision. He immediately identified a dozen individuals inside the building, one of them obviously fighting the others.

The individual that was fighting the others wasn’t a ordinary person, as Red Robin noticed the way she moved. He took a moment to send an alert signal to Gotham PD, and using his grappling gun, he jumped from roof to roof. Trough the roof windows, Red Robin saw Batwoman seeking cover behind some crates as a bunch of henchmen with Uzis and AK-47s shot at her. She was fast and knew how to use her surroundings, and moving quickly, she used her stun gun to take two of the thugs, before one of them pulled a Stinger…

  • – “Oh, Shit!!!” – Red Robin exclaimed, as the guy launched a missile against the bat-heroine.

Immediately springing into action as the missile exploded. He jumped trough the glass, trowing smoke grenades. The thugs were caught by surprise and were blinded by the dark smoke. They all fell prey to the Crusader, as Red Robin took them down hard and fast. He looked towards the explosion site with his special lenses, and caught sight of his fellow hero’s hand out of a pile of debris. Deciding that he didn’t have any time to loose, he used his new web-nets; he grabbed the disks from his arsenal and threw one against each fallen criminal. The disk, once activated sprung several lines that in contact with the body, enveloped it and released a foam that expanded quickly and became hard as concrete in seconds, trapping their victims for a couple of hours, more than enough time for Gotham’s Finests to arrest them.

Red Robin then rushed to Batwoman. He moved out the debris on top of her, and saw the redhead super-heroin unconscious. The Knight checked her pulse, and made sure that she was alive. She was bleeding, and needed medical attention. Knowing where he was and what his resources where, he used his comm and called the one person he could count on at that time..

  • == Hello? == – Her soothing voice answered.

  • – “Tam, I need you to do something for me” – Tim said…

[Half an hour later, on Tim Wayne’s Port Adams Penthouse]

Everything in the mind of Tamara Fox dictated that she should be surprised. But she knew better, so, when Red Robin showed up with an injured and unconscious Batwoman in a borrowed van in the garage, she simply came out the lift with the stretcher, and watched as the Crimson Knight put the redhead super-heroine on it, wheeling her into his apartment. Tim Wayne’s Penthouse in the historic Port Adams district was a old sweat shop building turned into a luxury condo, where he was the sole tenant, and his fiancé, of course….

Since Timothy pulled his ruse on Vicki Vale, and had to keep the crutches act for an year, she had moved in with him, to keep the appearances of him not being able to living alone. Naturally, there were benefits into moving with her “fiancé”, one of them being that she didn’t have to make excuses to her sister or to her father so that she could spend the nights with her hero. And the location was perfect, as Tim could access the freeway in a minute and was just a few blocks from the skyscrapers from the Garment District, and also not too far from the rehabilitation clinic that he had to attend to keep up pretenses for the next 12 months.

Timothy wheeled the Batwoman on his sickbay, and the computer started running a full scan of her body. After being on the brink of death more times than he would like to count on the past year, Wayne had learned to appreciate the value of a state-of-the-art medical room, and he made sure to have the most advanced medical technology in his Red Bunker (as Tam had dubbed his new base of operations).

  • – “How is she?” – Tam asked, looking at the dried blood on Batwoman’s abdomen.

  • – “She will survive.” – he said, as he removed the damaged pieces of Batwoman’s armor. – “Tam, hand me that scalpel there.”

Tamara did as she was asked, and she watched as Red Robin cut the opening in the armor, enough to leave the injury fully visible. She observed as he applied some sort of spray, and then prepared a syringe with some sort of anesthetic to inject her. Batwoman grunted as the needle perforated her skin, and Tam gentle touched her hair, trying to pass some level of comfort to the super-heroine. She immediately noticed that that wasn’t natural hair, as she removed the wig…

  • – “It’s a wig.” Tam said.

  • – “What?” – Tim asked, as he kept treating the wounded heroine.

  • – “A wig, she uses a wig…” – Tam said, holding the object in her hand. – “I don’t understand why, she really has red hair.”

Timothy looked at the Ebony Beauty, and said:

  • – “A subterfuge, probably…” – Tim said, as he kept working.

Tam looked at the heroine, her face not giving any hints as if she was conscious or not. She wiped of some of the sweat on Batwoman’s face and the dirty from her mask, and once again, the super-heroine grunted as Tim started to take of the splinters from her wounds. As Batwoman turned her face, Tam noticed the device semi-detached from her mask, that looked like a hands-free radio, that appeared to be turned on. She detached the device from the mask, and put to her ear, trying to see if it was broadcasting.

  • – “Hum, Tim, her comm is active.” – She said.

  • – “Let me see that.” – He asked, picking up the device from her hand, and inspecting it.

He played with it for a moment, and put to his ear, hearing a male voice repeat:

  • -== …tzzz you listening? Come in, soldier tzzz ==- the comm transmitted.

  • – “Batwoman is unconscious at the moment.” – Tim said, in his Red Robin voice.

He got silence on the radio for a moment, and believing that whoever was on the other side would not answer unless he identified himself, he spoke:

  • – “This is Red Robin. I spotted Batwoman in a fight against armed men” – Tim said. – “She got injured and I extracted her from the combat zone.”

After a few seconds of silence, the man on the comm replied:

  • -== How serious are her injuries? ==- The man asked.

  • – “She had explosions fragments on her abdomen and was pierced by a larger piece of wood that I removed at the site. She lost blood, and I’m testing her to determine her blood type.”

  • – == She’s O Negative. ==- the man replied. – == Where is she now? ==-

  • – “I brought her to my base. I have a fully equipped sickbay, Mister…” – Tim said, giving in the chance for the man to identify himself.

Again, silence on the other side. But this time, Batwoman murmured something…Tam, that was closer, listened in, and reported:

  • – “Tim, she called him Colonel, and I think he’s her dad.” – Tam said…

He nodded, glancing momentarily at the red-haired crime-fighter, and said on the radio:

  • – “Colonel, Sir… Your daughter will be ok, I’ll pass it to my assistant now, because I have to sew up these wounds.” – Tim said, passing the radio to Tam, as he kept treating Batwoman’s wound. – “Tam, set up a meeting on his residence. I’m picking him up as soon as I have her stabilized.”

Tamara just nodded and went on to talk to the Colonel as Timothy kept treating the red-haired heroine…

[Hours later]

The first thing Kate Kane noticed as she woke up was the daylight. She still felt kind of numb and weak, but she could discern the pastel colors on the wall, the paintings with nautical motives and the modern, Swedish design of the furniture. She could see the bay from the big tinted windows, and she could see Metropolis skyline on the other side of the bay. She looked at herself, and noticed that she wasn’t wearing her batsuit. She tried to get up, just to feel the pain on her abdomen, what discouraged her from doing it so.

Kate looked under the sheets and unbuttoned the shirt she was wearing (a man’s shirt, she noticed), and saw the bandages covering her midsection. She also noticed that she was wearing panties that were not hers, and she looked around, trying to figure it out just what the heck was happening. The sound of the door knob being twisted caught her attention, as she looked pointedly at the door. The person who entered the room left her shocked.

  • – “Tim Wayne?” – Kane said, surprise, as he was one of the last people she expected to see…

  • – “Good morning, Miss Kane.” – Timothy replied, cheerfully, with a tray in his hands. – “How are you feeling?”

  • – “A bit numb… where am I?” – Kate asked, keenly aware that he knew her name, watching as Wayne put the tray on the nightstand.

  • – “You’re in my house.” – he said, and grabbed the sheet, uncovering her body

Kate gave him a hard stare, and he said, unfazed:

  • – “I’m only checking your bandages, Miss Kane.” – Timothy said, and with a smirk, he added- “Don’t worry, I’m not going to take advantage of you. My fiancé even provided the undergarment to make sure that I don’t get tempted.”

The redhead woman gave Tim a dirty stare, and he said:

  • – “Just joking. Colonel Kane would rip my head off, if you didn’t do it first, of course.” – Tim said, as he examined the bandages, taking it off to take a look at the sutures. – “But my fiancé did provide the panties. Well, it looks good… the sutures, I mean.”

  • – “What happened?” – Kate asked

  • – “One of the thugs pulled a rocket launcher on you.” – Tim said, covering her back, moving to the tray. – “Good thing I was around the area. Would you like some tea?”

  • – “You were in the area…” – She repeated, suspicious.

  • – “Well, not dressed like this, of course…” – Tim replied, pouring some tea on the cup – “You’re not the only one with a fetish for black leather and jumping rooftops.”

He offered her the cup, and Timothy placed the tray on the bed. As she kept looking at him, obviously waiting for more information, he said:

  • – “In the battlefield, you know me as Red Robin.” – Tim informed, as he kept offering her the cup.

  • – “You’re Red Robin?” – Kate asked, skeptic.

  • – “Hard to believe that the Bachelor Heir of the Wayne family would have a double life as a superhero, huh?” – Tim said, sarcastically – “It’s so surreal, kind of thinking that the step-daughter to Gotham’s most prominent socialite alternative lifestyle deepest secret would not involve wild parties and other women, but bulletproof leather and jumping from rooftops…”

  • – “Point taken…” – Kate replied, as she accepted the cup.

Timothy smiled with satisfaction, he moved the tray over his guest lap in the bed. He pointed to the cellphone on the tray, and said

  • – “By the way, your father said that he’s coming back from Savannah already.” – He informed – “He knows you’re alive and well, and he will call here as soon as he lands. Me made me promise that I would have you call him as soon as you woke up”

  • – “Thank you.” – Kate said. – “The Colonel can be a bit overzealous from time to time. Specially since I kind of died before…”

  • – “In our line of work, there is nothing wrong with a little overzealousiness from time to time.” – Tim replied – “And about the Lazarus Pit, lets just say that you’re far from being the first one in Gotham to take a dive in one of those, but I can sympathize…”

The door opened at that moment, and Kate saw a young black woman come in, that seemed familiar to her. Tamara looked at the red-haired super-heroine, and she said:

  • – “Oh, you’re awake. I’m glad.” – Tam said, and looking at Tim, she said, handing him the leg braces. – “Tim, quick, My dad is coming by to check on you!”

  • – “Oh, boy…” – Tim said, his smile giving away to a expression of nuisance… – “Your dad seriously think that a guy that just got shot and can barely walk can be ravishing his daughter virginal body?”

  • – “Considering that he probably thinks that I’m still a virgin, yes…” – Tam replied, hugging from behind – “Tiffany probably thinks that you’re the one in danger of being ravished by me.”

  • – “Now, that’s closer to the truth…” – Timothy replied, smugly, earning a mock punch on the arm by his Ebony Beauty

Kate observed with some amusement the exchange between the two young adults. Then, she remembered that Tim Wayne had suffered an attempt on his life not about a week and a half ago, and he was supposedly on rehabilitation for the next several months. She looked as Timothy sat and started to strap in the braces, and said:

  • – “Some miraculous recovery that was, Mr. Wayne…” – The redhead woman said, with sarcasm – “Getting shot and almost dying in front of God and everyone else, and saving fellow superheroes from certain death one week later. The most impressive part was that Red Robin apprehended the assassin himself… ”

  • – “A necessary ruse, since our first one didn’t quite work.” – Tam replied, as she looked in to her PDA – “Quick, Tim, his car is two blocks away.”

  • – “And a serious one too… I’ve read that the doctors believe that you’re going to stay on those for a year, maybe too..” – Kate said. – “Whomever was onto you must have been pretty close to finding out about your leather fetish…”

  • – “Lets just say that noisy reporters are not a exclusivity of the shining towers across the bay” – Tim said, giving a quick glance to Metropolis from his windows – “I’m just glad that I’m not dealing with Lois Lane…”

  • – “If she lived here, I would move to Chicago…” – Kate replied, chuckling.

  • – “Time’s up, Tim!” – Tam, replied, as she turned off her PDA and held the door for him.

Timothy walked, already in the act, as if he really needed the crutches to move around, and approaching the door, he got closer to Tamara, in a intimate way, Kate noted:

  • – “Why don’t you help Kate to dress up?” – Tim suggested, with a gentle tone – “I will keep your father busy.”

  • – “Okay… be careful.” – she said, getting closer to touch his face with her and and give him a gentle kiss on the lips.

Kate observed with a certain degree of amusement as the couple exchanged another peck before Wayne left the room, and she was left alone with the girl… Kane noticed that the girl felt a bit awkward (and looked particularly cute like that), and offered her hand:

  • – “Kate Kane, nice to meet you.” – She said.

  • – “Tamara Fox, but everyone call’s me Tam. Nice to meet you too.” – Tam replied.

  • – “So, Tam, are you in the Rooftop Jumping Leather Club too?” – Kate asked as she tried to stand up.

  • – “Not exactly.” – Tam replied, as she helped the redhead to stand up – “I’m in the Targeted by Freak-Assassins and Black Ninjas Club.”

If Timothy were in the room he would probably have laughed at the shocked expression that the super-heroine made.

[By Sundown]

Kate Kane was seating in one of the chairs on the terrace, overlooking the lights on the cruisers that were anchored at the bay, and the lights of Metropolis, that looked cheerfully shiny even as the night started. She had her laptop with her, as her dad, the Colonel, had brought her once the sense of urgency to see his wounded daughter dialed down after she spoke with him on the phone, and she convinced him to go by her apartment first and get some clothes and some equipment. Much to her annoyance, the Colonel had extracted from her hosts a promise not to let her go out on duty until she had a clean bill of health.

What Colonel Kane didn’t know was that the Young Mr. Wayne had close contact with the most prominent super-hero physician in the world, Dr. Mid-Nite, that examined her via computer, and passed on to his costume buddy Red Robin a most miraculous treatment guideline, including some nanotechnology that the good doctor had insisted that the Crimson Knight included in his sickbay (which design had the counseling of Mid-Nite himself), and that was working wonders in her injuries. She would probably be back in action in 24 hours or so.

In the meantime, Kate was doing her intelligence report on the Criminals she fought on the Narrows, with some very much appreciated help from the Oracle herself, who apparently had a very close relation with the Young Mister Wayne. Kate knew the Bat-clan enough to know that the first Robin and former Nightwing was the Batman now (he had hit on her twice, and still hadn’t got the clue), that there was a second Robin that was thought dead and now was a murderous vigilante, and that the new Boy Wonder was a kid, leaving Robin III as the logical explanation for Red Robin.

Timothy Wayne, former Robin… Kate knew the implications, she had a pretty good idea of who the new Batman was, she knew that the first Batman was dead for a fact, and given that his host was the controlling shareholder of Wayne Enterprises, adding the fact that the people that knew Bruce Wayne noticed that he seemed more than a bit off, she had a pretty good hunch about who the original Batman was and some very colorful theories as to who was the man passing as Bruce Wayne, and none of those theories were good…

Another thing that Kate didn’t know what to make of was the relationship between her two young hosts. She thought at first that Waynegagement was a publicity stunt, and after learning about Wayne’s double life she theorized that this must have been the first ruse to take the reporter, Vicky Vale, off his trail (and as Tam said herself, didn’t work, hence the crutches and braces). But now, after spending half a day in their company, and noticing the way they look at each other and the way they behaved around each other, she believed that there was something more to it… Her thoughts were interrupted as she noticed the approaching footsteps. She noticed trough the glass reflex Tim Wayne, without the crutches, braces and without his fiancé, come up the stairs.

  • – “Where is the fair miss Fox?” – She asked, with a hint of malice.

  • – “Tam left on some errands of her own…” – He replied – “Probably she went to do a follow up with her sister after her dad’s visit. She want’s to make sure that he doesn’t get the wrong idea about her living here with me.”

  • – “I don’t know, but it looked to me like she wants the wrong idea to happen…” – the Redhead replied – “And by the way you act around her, I don’t think you would mind it either.”

  • – “That obvious, huh?” – Wayne asked.

She nodded her head, with a sympathetic look on her face.

  • – “So… you’re out of the act for the rest of the day?” – Kate asked looking pointedly at his legs.

  • – “Yep… And not a moment too soon.” – Timothy replied. He noticed the screen on her laptop and said – “Doing some homework, I see.”

  • – “The Colonel was pretty mad that I was caught so easily last night.” – the redhead replied – “It was pretty stupid not to inspect their cargo before trying to take them down.”

  • – “Don’t feel so bad about it. God knows I had my share of stupidity.” – Tim said, as he sat besides her on the sofa.

He pointed at her belly, and Kate moved the computer away, unbuttoning her shirt, revealing her bandages. Timothy lifted the bandages with utmost care, and inspected the wound, putting the bandage back in place after that. Kate looked with mild amusement at that man that was many years younger than her, but that had such a mature aura that she knew only tragedy could bring to a person.

  • – “So, doctor, will I be allowed in a sunbathing bikini anytime soon?” – Kane asked, with a bit of teasing.

  • – “Definitively yes. The sutures are all healed, and whatever little scar remains should be gone within 72 hours.” – He replied, a bit flustered, but trying to remain a gentleman – “That will be a battle scar you wont get to keep it.”

  • – “I already have too many of those.” – She replied, and kept teasing, just because she was having fun with the way he got flustered – “I’d rather save space for some love scratches for a change. You know how us girls love to run our long manicured nails on flesh.”

Timothy felt his collar a bit too tight, as he ran a finger to loose it up, and he felt the redness on his cheeks. He was capable of taking down a international criminal organization and a gang of super-assassins by himself, but being teased by a older, and beautiful woman was enough to make him red, even thought he was knew that said woman had a taste for the fair sex… At that moment, something flickered on Timothy’s mind:

  • – “Yeah… changing the topic a bit.. is it true that Batman made a pass on you after you both brought down that zombie?” – Tim asked…

  • – “You mean the new Batman? Yes, its true… that was the second time, but I don’t think he realized that.” – Kate said – “The first one was when he was still Nightwing, and as matter of fact, he wasn’t even wearing a mask…”

  • – “You mean…” – Tim asked, not very surprised that Batwoman knew the Dick’s identity, after all…

  • – “Mr. Richard ‘Dick’ Grayson made a pass on me in Bludhaven, years ago…” – Kate replied – “I cant blame him for doing again, after all, he didn’t know who he was talking to, and he did confess he was a thing for redheads… what explain he’s being around the Commissioner’s daughter a lot.”

Kate watched amused as Tim brought palmed his face, nodding his head in negative…

  • – “Dick, Dick, Dick… He never learns…” – Tim said, looking at his guest with a amused face.

Kate’s face became serious again, as she anticipated the real hard question…

  • – “Tim, I know that the first Batman is dead, and I’m pretty sure now that I know who he was.” – she started – “So, I do have to ask… Who exactly is that guy parading around town as Bruce Wayne?”

Timothy became serious again. He rose from the couch and looked at the pier. Katherine rose from the chair, and stepped besides him, as she felt that that was something big that he was considering if he trusted her enough to let her in or not. After a moment of silence, she heard his voice:

  • – “His name is Thomas Elliot, but you must have heard of him as Hush.” – Tim said.

  • – “I’ve heard the name, yes, and I was advised that he’s a very dangerous individual.” – Kate replied.

  • – “And you have been advised right. Hush is one of the deadliest foes of Batman.” – He said. – “He killed many people, hurt many, many others, he knows who both Batmans are, who all the Robins are, who I am, and probably a few others.”

  • – “But, why did you let him roam free like that if he’s so dangerous.” – She asked.

  • – “Bad timing. After Batman disappeared, and we were too busy saving the city from the criminals, he took the place of Bruce and kept him alive in the spotlight.” – Tim said – “We couldn’t take him out, and we couldn’t replace him, so we keep him under surveillance and in a tight leash.”

  • – “That’s a bad plan.” – Kate replied.

  • – “A temporary one… Bruce’s return will neutralize Hush.” – Wayne replied.

Kate looked at him surprised, and said:

  • – “What do you mean by Bruce’s return?” – She asked – “He’s dead, isn’t?”

  • – “You haven’t been in the JLA briefing recently, have you?” – He asked, and as she looked confused, he explained – “Batman is not dead. He’s lost in time. Darkseid didn’t kill him, he threw him out of his time, and now he’s coming back, unless we stop him.”

  • – “Stop him?” – Kate repeated.

  • – “Long story.” – Tim said, turning around – “I’ll tell you while I fix some dinner for us. Tam will probably eat with her father, so we have the frozen food trays, I hope you don’t mind…”

  • – “My friend, after you live on dried rations and barracks grub, you eat anything…” – Kate replied. – “I don’t care what we’re eating, as long as I don’t have to peel off potatoes..”

  • – “Don’t worry, the french fries are frozen too..” – Tim replied, cheerfully.

  • – “Oh, God… Frat Food… I hope I fit into my suit after that…” – She joked

  • – “Don’t worry, I’m pretty sure that a few runs on the rooftops will burn those calories..” – Timothy replied.

Tim smiled amused, as he led his guest down the stairs…

Red Robin – The Truth Within Lies (Part 2 of 2)

[ At the dance floor table]

  • “Commissioner Gordon?” – Tam said, noticing the newcomer. – “Is he coming to have diner with his daughter? Isn’t that Alfred with him?”

Tim turned around, and saw Gordon, and Alfred besides him, as the former waved at someone on the upper floor. Wayne looked up and was rather surprised in seeing Lucius, on a table with Vicki Vale.

  • “No, apparently, they came to have diner with you father.” – Timothy said.
  • “My father?” – Tam repeated, turning her head immediately, noticing her father for the first time in the room – “Oh, God…”

Lucius noticed the young couple looking at him, and waved at them,a wake that Tam returned awkwardly. She saw Vale leave the table, then her dad get up from the chair, and immediately she turned, trying to sink in the chair..

  • “Oh, God, he’s coming down, isn’t he?” – Tam asked, half-knowing the answer already.
  • “Yes, he is..” – Tim informed, and glancing over his shoulder and to the window, he added – “And Alfred, Gordon, Babs e Dick are coming over too..”

Tim could only smile sympathetic as the night he had planned had already been blown to bits by all the unexpected guests… Alfred and Jim got to their table at the same time as Lucius, and Dick and Babs came just behind the CEO. Gordon was surprised to see his daughter, and Alfred was surprised to see Tim, and Lucius was surprised to see everyone but his two old friends.

  • “Barbara, what a surprise.” – Jim said, with a smile.
  • “Hi, dad.”- Babs replied, receiving a loving kiss on the cheek from her dad. – “Dick made me a surprise and invited for diner.”
  • “Good evening, Commissioner.” – Dick greeted the man – “Its good to see you again.”
  • “Good evening, Richard.” – Gordon replied, amicable, and looking at the two teens with her daughter, he added – “And Stephanie, and Damian”
  • “Hello, Commissioner Gordon.” – Stephanie greeted him
  • “Hello everyone!” – Lucius greeted them all.

Tamara looked from her seat, feeling awkward, and said:

  • “Hello, Dad.” – Tam greeted.
  • “Mr. Fox.” – Timothy said, rising from his chair.

Alfred noticed Tim and Tam, and approached them…

  • “Good evening, Master Tim, Miss Fox.” – Alfred greeted them.
  • “Good evening, Alfred.” – Tim said, shaking the old man’s hand
  • “I didn’t know you were meeting this beautiful lady tonight, Master Tim” – Alfred said.
  • “And I didn’t know that you were meeting old friends tonight.” – Tim said, half sarcastic – “And I guess we both didn’t know that Dick was taking Babs, Damian and Steph for diner also… but, that happens.”

Alfred looked at Dick, Babs and the two teens with them, and said:

  • “Indeed, it happens.” – Alfred said…

Jim approached the couple, greeting both of them, and Dick, Babs, Steph and Damian came closer, forming an agglomerate of people in the middle of the floor, what caught the maitre‘s attention. He came by, and addressed them:

  • “Pardon me, Gentlemen.. are you all together?” – the Maitre asked

Dick, Tim, Babs, Tam and Lucius exchanged looks, but before they could speak, Damian, with a innocent face, got near Babs’ father and said:

  • “Oh yes, we are!” – Damian said, earning incredulous glances from everyone but Jim Gordon – “You see, sir, we met by chance, but we are all friends and family.”

Damian kept his performance, despite the looks he was receiving from the others, and turning to the Commissioner, he said:

  • “Wouldn’t it be nice if we all got a big table?” – Damian asked, with an innocent face and bright, hopeful smile.

Jim Gordon looked at the boy a bit awkward, and padded his head, looking at the rest of the group:

  • “Well, a guess that’s a good idea.” – Jim said, looking at the others.

Tim, Babs and Steph looked sharply at the younger Wayne, that kept his act nevertheless, and Dick, Alfred and Lucius, after exchanging several glances, nodded in agreement.

  • “Good then, if you all follow me, I will order the waiters to move all your orders and drinks to your new table.” – The Maitre said.
  • “Isn’t that great? All of us sitting together?” – Damian asked, with his flawless innocent smile.

The Boy wonder kept his act until Gordon turned away, and them Tam noticed, the hard glances from Dick, Tim, Babs, Alfred and Steph, and the evil smile that crept on Damian’s face…

  • “The night has just turned interesting.” – Damian said, with an expression worthy of Ras Al’Ghul himself.

[At the big table – after diner]

Tam Fox was sure that Tim Wayne was going to kill Damian. And he would have help, plenty of help. Damian was lucky that Stephanie and Timothy were not near him on the table, or one of the two would have strangled him already. Babs also wanted to kill Damian, and Dick, well, Tam was pretty sure that the older Wayne brother was mildly amused by the Younger Wayne Brother’s performance…

Damian had managed to tick Tim off three times, Stephanie two times, every single time with a expression of pure innocence that would have fooled everyone but the offended parts. The only reason why he didn’t do more was because Barbara Gordon had the foresight to sit next to the little troublemaker, and held him by his ear a number of times, until Damian decided that losing a ear wasn’t worthy the trouble. Truth be told, it Babs had been easy on the kid until he asked her dad if Dick had asked her hand formally or if his daughter and Wayne’s oldest son were going to elope… after that, Jim, Lucius and Alfred decided that this was way too much serious topics and started to share embarrassing stories of their children, much to Dick’s, Bab’s and Tam’s dismay.

  • “Oh, Please, can you call Pru and ask her to kill me?” – Tam asked Tim in a dramatic tone.
  • “Come now, it is kind of funny.” – Tim said, trying to comfort her, sorta of.. – “A bit humiliating, but amusing…”
  • “You’re not helping…” – She replied with a growl.
  • “Ok, ok…” – Tim conceded, as he looked around…

Tamara rested her head on his shoulder, with no hope of escaping those horror stories of her childhood that her father loved to tell, when Tim intervened.

  • “Ok, come with me…” – Wayne commanded.
  • “Come where?” – She asked.
  • “You’ll see.” – He said, with a charming smile.

She raised her head, looking at him with curiosity, as he rose from his chair and moved to help her out. The others noticed his movement, and looked at the couple:

  • “Where are you going, Tim?” – Dick asked.

Timothy simply smiled, not answering the question, as he held Tam’s hand and walked away from the table:

  • “Enjoy the dessert, guys.” – He said.

As they moved away, and towards the stairs, Tam asked again:

  • “Where are you taking me, Mr Wayne?” – She asked.
  • “You’ll see, Miss Fox” – He replied again.

The two young adults went down to the main floor, and Tamara noticed a dozen individuals, all dressed uniformly, prepping instruments to be played. Immediately she stopped on her tracks, already understanding what her date wanted:

  • “Oh, no, no..” – Tam said – “Tim Drake Wayne, you better not be planning what I think you are planning to do.”

Timothy grabbed her hand again, this time not letting go, and kept going:

  • “I came here to night to be with you, Tam.” – He said – “As much as I like your father, Alfred, my friends and my brothers, I didn’t come here to enjoy they company, I came here to enjoy your company, yours and yours alone.”

He turned to her, bringing her close to him, as his hand moved to her waist:

  • “We survived a bunch a ninja, saved the day and protected the Wayne legacy… I think we deserve to have some fun ourselves.” – He added.
  • “What about all the people? This will make our engagement problem even worse!” – She pointed out.
  • “Let them talk… the only thing that I care today is that you’re here with me, and I would not have it any other way.” – Tim said.

Tam felt her heart pounding, and he knees trembling slightly with those words… Her brown eyes fitted the blue of his eyes, as she smiled happily…

  • “So, we’re back to the part when the hero trying to impress the girl?” – She asked, moving her head closer to him…

He smiled charmingly and got even closer:

  • “No, that’s the part when he kisses the girl.” – He said, his breath tingling in her skin.
  • “Good, I love this part.” -she said in a whisper, half-opening her mouth, welcoming him to a kiss…

[ On the Upper Floor]

Alfred heard the sweet melody of Moonlight Serenade playing on the main floor, and he turned from the table to look at the band, but he got a surprise when he looked down.

  • “Oh, My…” – Alfred exclaimed, getting the attention of Jim, Lucius and Stephanie
  • “What happened, Alf…Oh… Oh my…” – Jim Gordon said, as he looked down.

Immediately, Lucius and Stephanie, that were closer to the ledge turned to see what was the commotion all about, and they were shocked… Steph felt as if something had ripped her guts off, as she watched her former something kissing that girl the same way he used to kiss her. ‘No,not the same way…‘, Stephanie thought. Tim wasn’t the same, he had grown, matured, and that wasn’t the enthusiastic, energetic, juvenile kiss that she had been kissed before; this was intimate, deep… an adult kiss.

  • “Tamara?” – Fox exclaimed, as he witnessed his daughter kissing Timothy Wayne.
  • “What is happening?” Dick asked, rising from his chair, and seen the scene – “Oh… Oh! Babs, you have to see this.”
  • “See what? What are you do…??” – Barbara asked, confused, as Dick grabbed her chair and moved her close to the balcony – “Dick, what are you …Oh!!”

Barbara Gordon smiled for a moment, as she saw what they were seen, but she immediately looked away, as she noticed Stephanie rising from her chair and moving away towards the terrace. Barbara knew about her pupil and Tim, and she looked at Grayson, and said:

  • “I’ll go after her.” -Barbara said.

Dick nodded his head, moving away so that Babs could maneuver her wheelchair. He got closer to the rail as did Damian… Jim patted Lucius in the back and said:

  • “Well, Lucius, I guess congratulations are in order, pal.” – Gordon said.
  • “I guess you’re right…” – Lucius said, still surprised.

Downstairs, in one of the tables, Vicki Vale shared the same surprise, as she was certain that the girl had lied to her to justify her presence at the manor that night. As she observed the couple starting to dance, she balanced her head, with a amused smile and turned away, believing that perhaps, waynegangement could turn out into something other than a ruse, after all.

[Gotham City – Godfrey’s Terrace Restaurant]

On the Edge of the Fashion District, facing the ocean and the lights of New Troy on the other side of the bay, Godfrey’s Terrace was considered one of the hidden gems of Gotham’s Gourmet Circuit. The grandeur of the Art Nouveau architecture from the turn of the 20th century and the Parisian decoration gave a charm that was unique to the place. But there was nothing charming about the way Tamara Fox had been left waiting by the person who had invited her for that night.

Tam knew that he probably had a good reason to be late, probably fighting crime and saving lives somewhere along the rooftops of Gotham. She knew of his recent activities in Chinatown, trying to end the gang war there and put some corrupt officials in jail; maybe that’s what he was doing right at that moment, and she understood the importance of what he did, but that didn’t mean that she had to be radiant about it, even though she was dressed to that effect…

As she played with the empty glass on the table with her finger, she thought about what her life… it wasn’t Tim’s lateness alone that bothered Tam, it was the whole relationship between them, promptly dragged into the spotlight by that Noisy Blonde Bimbo that forced her to make up a story for her closeness with the adoptive son of Bruce Wayne. And speaking of the devil…

  • “Oh, hello, Miss Fox… or should I call you future-Mrs Wayne?” – Vicki Vale greeted amicably.

  • “Hello, Miss Vale, and goodbye…” – Tam replied in a cold tone, and turned her head to the window.

Vicki Vale smirked, and took the empty chair across from the ebony beauty. Tam turned to her uninvited companion and said:

  • “I don’t remember inviting you to my table, Miss. Vale.” – Tam said.

  • “Please, Call me Vicki” – The Columnist said, and crossing her legs, she said, with a predatory smile – “Besides, I just wanted to ask you how did you feel about your fiancé painting himself as a target in that press conference?”

Tamara stared daggers at Vale, giving the reporter the clue she wanted.

  • “You surely realize that whoever those crooked cops are, they know that Tim Wayne knows about them and it is in a position to harm them, what makes him a logical target.” – Vale said, and leaning in, with a mock whisper, she added – “And by extension, you, Miss Fox.”

  • “Tim knows what he’s doing, and I trust him.” – Tam retorted, with a hint of anger in her voice.

Vicki looked unfazed at the angry stare from Tam, as she pressed on:

  • “I’m pretty sure you do… the same way that He trusts you with covering his nocturnal activities.” – Vale said. – “Who knows? You might cover for all of them at one point.. The butler is an expert at it, he could probably give you a few pointers..”

The look in Tam’s face became even more severe as the spoke:

  • “I think that it is time for you to go.” – Tam stated

Vicki rose from the chair, always under the glare of Tam, and she passed the table, stopping next to Fox. She put a hand o Tam’s shoulder and leaned, whispering:

  • “By the Way, how was your trip to the Middle East?” – Vale asked.

Tam turned her head to the blonde Columnist and rose from her chair, facing the blonde reporter with a fierce attitude, sticking a finger in Vale’s face:

  • “Stay out of our lives….” – Tam growled.

For a moment, the two women were in a stalemate, as Vicki didn’t bulge, but when a strong grip forcefully made her turn on her heels, her calming demeanor was shattered as she faced the dark glance of a pair of blue eyes. Timothy Drake Wayne held the Columnist with a firm grip, a bit tight and a clear sign that he wasn’t happy…

  • “Tim!” – Vicki said, startled.

She gulped, suddenly afraid, as the Heir of Bruce Wayne narrowed his eyes, giving her a intimidating and frightening stare that made her feel as if the room temperature had dropped several degrees at once… Behind her, Tam saw Tim eyes and recognized immediately the dark stare of Red Robin that he was using on the blond reporter. Tamara almost pitied her…

  • “You already got your headline, Miss Vale.” – Tim’s voice sounded even, but there was an edge to it that made Vale shiver and want to get away from him. – “I suggest that you take Tamara’s advice to stay out of our lives, before I decide to return the favor and bring to light some of your own private affairs.”

  • “I don’t know what you’re….” – Vale tried to speak, just to me cut abruptly again

  • “I’m sure that The Flamingo bring back memories of your good friends, Santos, Foster and Bergdorf…” – Wayne said, making the Columnist turn paler and paler…

  • “W-wha.. h-how…?” – Vicki stuttered in panic…

Vale looked stoic for a moment, and then brought up a discreet smile to her face. Tim released her, as she crossed her arms:

  • “Very good, Tim Wayne.” – Vale said – “So, are we in the blackmailing stage now?”

  • “Stay out of my affairs, and I’ll stay out of yours…” – Wayne replied, with a cynical voice.

Vale looked at Tim, not with the anger Tamara expected, but with admiration:

  • “This isn’t over, Mr. Wayne” – Vicki said, and turning to Tam, she said – “And Waynengagement wont fade so easily.”

  • “It is over for tonight.” – Tim stated, with finality.

Wayne looked over his shoulder to his Ebony Beauty, that nodded approvingly at him. The Blonde Columnist, knowing better than to press the young couple anymore that night, gave a polite smile and said:

  • “Very well, then.” – Vicki said, looking around, and at the entrance – “We have an understanding, so I will leave you lovebirds alone now. Bye Bye…”

Tamara watched as the reporter moved away, greeting some other socialites with polite smiles, and she looked at her hero, that was not watching the Blonde Bimbo, but he was staring at her, from head to toe. Tam felt herself blush…

  • “You look… adorable, Miss Fox” – Tim said, with a charming smile.

  • “Why, thank you, Mister Wayne.” – Tam replied, with a smile that could warm even the coldest heart. – “You looking very handsome yourself, if not a bit on the bon vivant side.”

Tim raised an eyebrow inquisitively, as she looked pointedly to his tie unknotted. She got near him, bringing her hands to his chest, sliding it until she reached the tie. Tim stood patiently with a smile as she fixed his tie:

  • “Good thing that I did that for my dad may, many times.” – Tam said.

  • “I was in a hurry, I didn’t want to leave you waiting any longer.” -He replied.

  • “And as always, you arrive at the right time to save the girl.” – She said, in a flirtatious tone – “Why, Mister Wayne, one might start thinking that the hero might be trying to impress the girl. There, it’s fixed now.”

Before she moved her hands away, she felt his warm hands over hers, keeping her near. With a charming smile, he said:

  • “Maybe he is trying to impress the girl.” – Tim said – “What do you think, Miss Fox, will she be impressed?”

  • “She will fall in his arms, madly in love” – Tam replied, teasing him.

  • “That’s what I’m counting on.” – He said, as he leaned close to her, whispering in her ear.

Tam felt a shiver trough her body, as his warm breath touched her skin. He smelled her perfume and smiled, leaning back again. She looked in his eyes, charmed by his smile, until the spell was broken by a third individual:

  • “Please, Drake, refrain yourself.” – Damian Wayne said – “I’m came here to eat, not to be nauseated”

Tamara and Timothy turned their heads to the younger heir of the Wayne family, that was accompanied by Richard Grayson, Barbara Gordon and Stephanie Brown. Tam noticed that the blond girl was staring daggers at them two. She knew the ward of Bruce Wayne, and she also knew the daughter of Commissioner Gordon, who apparently was on the loop, and knowing what she knew, it wasn’t so difficult to figure it out who the blonde girl was…

  • “Good Evening, Tim.” – Dick said, and extending his hand, he acknowledged Tam – “And You must be Tam.”

She accepted his gesture, and Grayson bowed, kissing her hand.

  • “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Miss Fox.” – Grayson said.

  • “The pleasure is all mine, Mr. Grayson. And please, call me Tam.” – Tamara said.

  • “Only if you call me Dick.” – Grayson replied with his usual charm.

  • “Tam, this is our dear friend, Barbara, and my snotty young brother, Damian.” – Tim made more introductions.

Tamara shook Barbara’s hand with a smile, and said:

  • “Nice to meet you, Miss Gordon.” – Tam said. – “My father always speaks kindly of the Commissioner.”

  • “Your father is a good friend, Tam.” – Barbara said – “And please, call me Barbara.”

Tam smiled and turned to Damian, offering her hand. Damian shook her hand and as she noticed the bandages on his face, she asked:

  • “Oh dear, how did you get hurt?.” – Tam asked.

Damian looked at Tim, narrowing his eyes, and said:

  • “Ask your fiancé.” – Damian replied.

Tamara looked back at her date, and Timothy looked unfazed at the new Boy Wonder:

  • “You cut my line” – Tim stated, calmly

  • “And you put me on The List.” – Damian retorted, with venom in is voice.

  • “You threw me from the top of the dinosaur.” – Tim gave replied back.

  • Touché” – Damian said with a smirk.

As the Youngling didn’t reply, Timothy glanced at Stephanie, and holding Tamara’s hand and said:

  • “Tam, I would like to introduce you to a good friend of mine, Stephanie.” – Tim said, and in turn, he addressed the blonde – “Steph, this is Tam Fox…”

My fiancé‘ Timothy completed the sentence in his mind, but didn’t voice it out. Stephanie noticed the knowing look on Tamara’s face, and she knew that she was onto her. Steph knew that the girl knew about Red Robin, and she would have probably figured the rest out by now, specially after seen her with Dick and Damian.

  • “We’ve met.” – Both Tam and Steph said as they shook hands.

Tim arched an eyebrow, and Dick and Babs smiled, amused. Damian had a bastard grin on his face, as he said:

  • “I must say, Drake, you traded up.” – He said – “At least this one doesn’t need stuffing to show a bust.”

Immediately Stephanie glanced at Damian, revolted by his words:

  • “What! You son of …” – Steph started, being interrupted by Babs:

  • “Stephanie!” – Barbara said, in a severe tone – “Manners, please.”

Brown took a deep breath, not wanting to receive a reprimand from her mentor, and kept shooting daggers at Damian, that kept his grin, until Babs got him by his ear, that is…

  • “HEY!! Ouch, ooouch… Quit it, woman!” – Damian complained, as he was dragged by his ear to face Gordon.

Damian’s bravado stopped as soon as he faced Barbara, and behind her, Grayson. Besides Tam, Tim watched amused as Babs said something just for the boy to hear, and released him. Damian looked at Babs as if he wanted to set her on fire, but refrained himself from say anything, just turning to Tam and Tim:

  • “It was a pleasure to meet you, Miss Fox. My regards to your father.” – Damian said, and looking at Tim, he just nodded – “Drake.”

  • “Damian..” – Tim nodded back

  • “You two enjoy the evening.” – Dick said

Tamara observed as the two adults and the two teenagers moved away, Damian and Stephanie bickering along the way, and then she looked at Timothy, who was holding the chair to her.

  • “Are they always like that?” – Tam asked, as she accepted his gesture.

  • “Apparently yes..” – Tim said, tucking the chair in for her, and walking to his own chair – “Between my night life, the foundation and our engagement, I haven’t been around them enough to see.”

Tam waited for him to seat, and saw Wayne gesture to someone behind her. The waiter came promptly, having being there for quite some time already. He approached the table with a smile, and handed them both the menus…

[At the same time, on the upper level.]

Vicki Vale moved away as soon as she saw Dick entering the restaurant. She didn’t want to have to deal with the elder brother so soon after the last time. As she walked on the upper level of the restaurant, she saw glimpses of the informal family meeting, but she was abruptly stopped by a hand that grabbed her arm. Vicki looked away from the Wayne family to the owner of the offending hand, just to find Lucius Fox, CEO of Wayne Enterprises, seated at a table.

  • “Oh, hello, Mr. Fox.” – Vicki said. – “Fancy meeting you here.”

  • “Good evening, Miss Vale.” – Lucius said, and gesturing to the empty chair, he said – “Please, have a seat.”

The Columnist looked at the middle-aged man, and nodded affirmatively… she took the seat, and looked down to the main floor, with a smirk:

  • “So, the father comes to watch over his daughter…” – Vicki said.

  • “I’m not here to spy on my daughter, Miss Vale.” – Lucius stated, grabbing the wine bottle and filling the empty glass in front of the reporter. – “I came to meet some old friends, and my older daughter. I didn’t know Tamara would be here.”

  • “She came here to meet her fiancé.” – Vale said accepting the wine – “I’m sure that you as her father approves this relationship, of course…”

  • “Timothy Wayne is a good is a nice young man, decent and with good character. I see no wrong in him, and Tamara is a very level-headed and independent woman, I trust her judgment.” – Lucius said, and with a cynical smirk, he added – “I even framed your front page and put it on the wall.”

Vicki smiled, as Lucius looked over his shoulder at the table where his daughter and her date were talking and enjoying each others company. He looked back at the reporter and said:

  • “I understand that is your job to go after the news, Miss Vale, but I would appreciate if you could be gentler when dealing with my daughter.” – Lucius said, as he sipped his wine.

  • “I’m being as gentle as I can be, Mr. Fox, but your daughter being engaged to the Heir of Bruce Wayne is news in this city.” – Vicki said, and looking down again, she added – “Besides, they do look good together.”

Lucius looked over his shoulder again, catching a glimpse of Tam’s wholehearted laugh at something that Tim said. Fox smiled himself, looking at how beautiful and how much his youngest daughter resembled her mother.

  • “Yes, they do…” – Lucius agreed, in a gentler voice

[In another table, near the windows]

  • “Look at them.” – Barbara Gordon said, discreetly, to Dick.

Richard Grayson, who was verifying his messages from the League turned to the table, believing that Babs was talking about Damian and Stephanie, but they were still bickering as usual, with Steph stealing furtive glances at a certain table near the dance floor. And then, Dick noticed… the easy smiles, the hands touching in the table, the flirting…

  • “They seem to be enjoying themselves.” – Dick replied to Babs.

  • “Waaay too much, if you ask me…” – Stephanie said, in a bad mood.

  • “It seems to me that somebody is jealous..” – Damian provoked.

  • “Steph, if you’re not feeling comfortable being around…” – Barbara said.

  • “I’m perfectly comfortable being here.” – Stephanie replied, in a indignant tone. – “Timothy Drake Wayne can date whoever he wants, get engaged to whoever he wants, I don’t care!, it’s none of my business.”

Babs knew better, but she didn’t press on.. Dick noticed Damian looking to the other side, and smirking. He followed his partner line of sight and noticed what he had seen…

  • “Lucius Fox is here?” – Dick said, in disbelief.

  • “Here? Where?” – Stephanie asked.

  • “Upper floor, third table right of the statue.” – Barbara said, in a even voice.

  • “You don’t think that he came to spy on his daughter, do you?” – Stephanie asked.

  • “Lucius is not that overzealous.” – Dick replied – “Besides, he’s talking to… Vicki Vale??”

  • “Well, perhaps he’s being overzealous in his own way..” – Stephanie suggested – “Not worrying about her date, but about the press.”

  • “A pity. That would be another vote for my motion of No Confidence in Drake.” – Damian said, sipping his soda.

  • “He really filled those motions?” – Babs asked discreetly to Dick.

  • “Seventeen of them.” – Grayson replied.

Babs just shook her head in negative, offering her glass for Grayson to fill it up.

  • “Speaking of overzealous fathers… What is your father doing here, Babs?” – Stephanie asked, as she noticed the newcomers – “And with Alfred?”

Babs, Dick and Damian looked toward the entrance, where Commissioner James Gordon and Alfred Pennyworth had just appeared… They noticed as Babs father waved to someone on the upper floor, and were surprised to see Lucius reply the gesture.

  • “Okay, that’s getting interesting..” – Dick said, slightly surprised.
